The discussion will verge on the recent Storia Mondiale dell’Italia, edited by Andrea Giardina, Emmanuel Betta, Maria Pia Donato, Amedeo Feniello and published by Laterza in 2017. The book, inspired by Patrick Boucheron’s Histoire mondiale de la France, gathers contributions by 180 historians. They explore the exceptionally rich variety of peoples and social and ethnic groups who migrated to and from the Peninsula since pre-historic times to the present, and delve into the global interconnections which shaped Italy politically and culturally. The book is intended for a broad readership and raises important questions of how to make national history in a transnational framework.
